This “maltracking” may be a result of weak thigh muscles, in particular those on the inside of knee, poor foot posture (flat feet), muscle tightness or muscle imbalance around the knee or hip or a combination of these.
The problem occurs at any age, but particularly in teenagers and young women and after knee surgery or injury. Knee swelling will inhibit these supporting muscles of the knee causing them to become weaker and less able to do their job of supporting the knee.
A physiotherapist will be able to assess the position of the knee cap, along with muscle strength, muscle length and foot posture and determine the most effective treatment for you.
Treatment involves settling the pain, instruction in strengthening and stretching exercises, taping to support the knee cap and arch supports (orthotics) if necessary.
This will all help to minimize your pain, correct the problem, prevent reoccurrence and allow you to return to your sport and/or other activities quicker.
